Have you ever have the thought of Real Madrid in the Spanish Segunda in the 21st century? Sure such wouldn’t cross your mind; Madrid have good management, are wealthy enough to buy their way out and above all play very good football. But that which actually holds you back from such a thought is perhaps how odd it will be. How frightening it will be to look at the La Liga table without Real. That is exactly how unthinkable it is to see giants in Ghanaian football, Accra Hearts of Oak in the lower division.
It seems a bit of fairytale stuff. A reason which has given birth to a number of conspiracy theories. These theories now overlook how probable it is and falls on how exactly the ‘invisible hands’ may prevent the unthinkable. It’s no longer can the great Hearts of Oak be relegated, it is will Hearts be relegated? What do our conspiracy theorists say?
The Theory of Boardroom Points. Instances of deduction and awarding of league points in the boardroom is a global happening. But how rampant is it in Ghana. More worryingly how cheaply they are given away. News of Asante Kotoko initiating proceedings to have the Ghana Football Association deduct points from Berekum Chelsea over non-payment of transfer fee percentages to West Africa Football Academy of WAFA broke earlier this year. In 2008, Tema Real Sportive lost three points to demoted Zaytuna for fielding an unqualified player and with RTU at the time preparing to protest against the former for the same offence, Accra Great Olympics held on to hopes though they had been relegated. You may never know what Hearts have up their sleeves now. Our conspiracy theorist say; should Hearts just match to the boardroom they will have their way.
The Theory of Dark Forces. It’s a free world. Freedom of worship it is! If you can pray, I can pray. Rumors of white handkerchiefs, flying powder and the likes have made news in the Ghanaian league over the years. Like it or not spiritualism is part of modern day football. No matter how skeptical you may be, clubs have found their way out in such dealings. There’s no law against that. Is there? Our conspiracy theorist say; if you see that little bird flying on that goalpost, relax it may be heaven sent.

Accra Hearts of Oak face a daunting relegation battle.
The Theory of Expand our League. Our league needs to grow. It needs to grow in quality and numbers. In every sense of the word grow. No law prohibits a league of twenty teams. Well wait, that’s too much for Ghana, eighteen should be ok right? Our theorists say, if Hearts of Oak is condemned to the lower league, then expect more than sixteen teams in the league next season.
The Theory of Order from Above. How many ridiculous decisions have you seen from officials during a football match? It’s mostly painful if you are at the receiving end. Well, so far as the referee says he was acting in his full conscience of fairness, nothing really can be done. The worse is a sanction on the official. But wait, if the order is from above how tough can a sanction be? Our conspiracy theorist say; be prepared for the most behind blowing officiating decisions.
Which side the coin will fall is only a matter of time now. No matter how hard it is to take, or how odd it may seem, we see the strange almost happening. The spirit of never say die is now more needed than ever. The remaining fixtures of Accra Hearts of Oak, quite an ask; Liberty Professionals, Bechem United, Medeama, Brekum Chelsea and WAFA calls for determination, motivation and a real fight against an unwanted history.
There is the school of thought that a relegation will be a lesson to put their house in order to come back stronger, the other reminds us counting starts from one. It may the division one first and down and down. Whichever way, whatever conspiracy theories are saying, there are many who will not like to tell the next generation how great Accra Hearts of Oak was.
