La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid are hoping to land Arsenal’s Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla this summer, according to the Daily Mail.
Diego Simeone’s side have been targeting the ex-Villarreal man for some time, and with him turning 31 later this year, time is running out for Atletico to land the player at his peak.
However, after signing a contract extension last year, Cazorla’s current deal does not expire until 2017, and he will hold a key role at The Emirates next season.
Therefore, it seems highly unlikely that Arsenal will be willing to let him leave the club this summer, unless they received an offer they simply cannot pass up.
Simeone has repeatedly tried and failed in his pursuit of the Gunners ace, so it is not the first time that Atletico Madrid have made an attempt to lure Cazorla back to Spain.
However, with current star Arda Turan set to depart the Vicente Calderon this summer, a creative attacking player will be needed as a replacement.
No intention to sell
Given Cazorla’s key player status at The Emirates, Arsene Wenger will be very reluctant to sell. He may though, be open to listening to offers, provided they are sufficient.
In three seasons with The Gunners, Cazorla has been a first-team regular, scoring 23 goals in 106 Premier League appearances.
He ended the 2014-15 season on a high note, landing the Man of the Match award in the FA Cup Final victory over Aston Villa at Wembley; and finished the league campaign with 11 assists – the second highest in the league behind ex-Gunner Cesc Fabregas.
Following the signing of goalkeeper Petr Cech, Arsenal are finally putting together a side worthy of winning the Premier League title, so the departure of a player like Cazorla this summer would be absurd.
